I Love My Nook

I have a Barnes and Noble Nook, and I don't really think it would matter what kind of e-reader I had, I absolutely love it.  I'm currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo, and for that large of a book to be on just a tiny tablet is so convenient.

Another nice feature about these e-readers, is that you can download a lot of the classics (like The Count of Monte Cristo!)  for free either from Google Books or another site that I really enjoy, called Forgotten Books.  On the Forgotten Books site, you can choose books a couple of different ways.  For example, you can pay a certain amount of money for a certain number of high quality downloads per month, or you can do what I do, and sign up to have a new free high quality book sent to your email account each day.  You can even download any book you want, but it's a lower quality.  That's why I like the book a day method.

Reading is such a great activity, and you can even do it while you exercise.  For example, tonight I think I'm going to hop on the treadmill, and bring my Nook along with me.  All I have to do is make the print a bit bigger, and I'll have no problem getting a little further in my book tonight!

Peggy Carter: Makeup Tutorial

I love how pretty superheros' girlfriends are.  Although I may not have been as big a fan of Captain America: The First Avenger as I have been for some of the other comics-made-movies, I still appreciate the style of Peggy Carter, who is Steve Roger's love interest in the movie.

She has a very pretty, vintage look with a neutral, slightly smoky eye, neutral cheeks, and a bright red lip.  I simply couldn't resist trying to replicate her makeup look with products from my own collection, and then putting a personal little spin on it.  I thought I'd share my look with you, along with a little card that I created for Too Faced eye shadow palettes to help you remember what the eye looked like without having to refer back to this blog or video for all the steps.

Because it's difficult to write all the steps in a makeup tutorial, I instead decided to list the products I used, and include the video for your use.  I hope you enjoy!

Water

So, I've been on a health kick recently, and the main reason so far has been that I really want to get my skin to be really smooth and soft.  I have a condition called a-topic dermatitis, which, from what I understand, basically means that not only do you have really dry skin, but if that dry skin is not taken care of, you can get infections that can be pretty nasty.  It's not something that I have had many problems with lately, but occasionally I will still have a break-out, and it lowers my self-confidence greatly.

A good way to avoid this, of course, is to not only apply moisturizer on a regular basis, but it is also important to drink plenty of water.  Until now, I have been very bad to my skin.  I drink a lot of pop, don't really drink water, and although I do occasionally apply a body moisturizer, it certainly isn't enough.

Three days ago, however, I decided to really start taking care of this, and started drinking a lot of water.  A lot.  I also cut out the pop, and I have to say, I am already feeling the positive effects from it.  Today, I noticed that my skin was actually soft for the first time in an incredibly long time, and it almost felt like I was wearing lotion the entire day.  I cannot stress enough how important it is to drink water.  It just balances your body out, so that your skin is hydrated, and washes your body out, keeping your insides nice and healthy, too.  Not to mention, I feel more energetic now than I did from caffeine.

Review of Remington Ceramic Pearl-Infused Straightener

I recently purchased a Remington 1" Ceramic Pearl-Infused straightener, after my old straightener broke, and thought that a review of the product might be a relevant topic for a beauty blog.  I admit that I had been looking at some of the other Remington Ceramic Pearl-Infused products, including the curling wand, 2" straightener, and clip setter set.  What originally drew me to the product was its appearance.  My eyes seem to be attracted to the baby pink of the plates, and when that color is paired with black, I think it looks so stylish and chic.

I decided on the 1" straightener, simply because I felt that I could do more with it than I could with the other products, whether I wanted it straight, in waves (including s-waves, like Peggy Carter, which I will be posting about soon!), or even actual curls.  That way, if I liked it, I would have the option of getting more products from this line, and if I didn't, then I could still get a fair amount of use from it.

My initial experience with this straightener has been a good one.  It heats up very quickly, and will automatically turn off if left on too long.  Both of these features are very important to me, because first, I am not usually a fan of getting up in the morning, and so if I'm going to style my hair using heat, I need it to go as fast as possible.  That's where the fast start-up time comes in handy.  Second, I am a bit forgetful, and I've noticed with different straighteners and curlers that I've had in the past, I often forget to turn them off.  This, of course, is a very dangerous habit, so the automatic turn-off is a good feature.

It straightens my hair very quickly, and also keeps my hair from frizzing up.  As a person that struggles with frizziness, I cannot begin to tell you how great that is.  I also appreciate the ease as to specifying the temperature of the straightener, and the LCD display.  The display even tells you what thickness of hair a specific temperature would be best for.  Overall, I really like it, and at $34.88, it's really an affordable straightener with a 4-year warranty.  I will certainly be thinking of trying other products from this line.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America: The First Avenger is about a young man named Steve Rogers who wants to join the military during World War II.  However, he is deemed unfit for service because not only is he a small, frail man, but he also suffers from a number of physical ailments.  One day, when he is at a carnival with his best friend, Bucky, he is noticed by a German scientist, who transforms this small young man into a tall, toned, attractive army man that becomes Captain America.

He is not immediately seen as an active superhero, though.  Instead, he is pushed into show business in order to sell bonds to the American public in order to fund the war.  On a trip abroad, putting on his show, Steve learns that his friend, Bucky, has been captured along with many other men by Johann Schmidt, aka Red Skull.  Right on cue, Steve's love interest, Peggy Carter, shows up to convince Steve that he is meant for more than show business, and along with Howard Stark, Captain America moves from show business to the military when he frees the prisoners of Red Skull.

Eventually, Red Skull and Captain America end up on Red Skull's plane.  Red Skull is the one that eventually destroys himself, by mishandling the Norwegian tesseract, which until then had been powering all of Red Skull's weapons.  Steve is left alone on the plane, which is destined to New York, and rather than blowing up the city, he instead brings the plane down in a frozen wasteland, only to be discovered about seventy years later.  The end of the movie shows Steve waking up from a seventy year sleep, so we can only imagine that he was cryogenically frozen or something of the like, but it is not mentioned in the film.

Overall, I thought that the movie was just okay.  It was certainly a necessary film to precede The Avengers, which is scheduled to come out sometime next year, and while they did a good job of giving Captain America his own story, it was quite clearly a transition film.  I certainly appreciated having Howard Stark working so closely to Steve Rogers, and I thought Peggy Carter had such pretty makeup that I plan to do a tutorial on her sometime soon, but as for Steve, or Captain America, himself, I wasn't really impressed.  Of course, who could really compare after Thor?  Now, there was an attractive hunk of man.

So, to sum it all up, I thought that the story was good, but there was too much emphasis on how it connected to the other movies in the Avengers series.
